Abstract

Literary translation, particularly when dealing with texts rich in style, phonetic nuances, or intertextual references to a literary tradition, is not only a challenging playful and motivating linguistic and cultural experience, but also serves as a highly stimulating training ground for developing learners' critical and creative thinking.

In our workshop, we will analyze a series of examples of “extreme” texts (nursery rhymes, anagrams, nonsense, puns, etc.) to demonstrate how satisfactory and innovative solutions can be identified, even within the apparently limited, impassable spaces permitted by numerous semantic, rhythmic and phonetic constraints.

Just as gear teeth require some play to avoid jamming when they mesh, so the two linguistic/cultural systems involved in the translation process leave some creative space for the translator.  Finding this tiny space of freedom and playfulness ensures that the final product is dynamic, vibrant, and full of life, as every translation of a living text should be.
