ELV Studiedag 2025: Keynote lecture by Daniel Hahn
On Friday, November 7, ELV will hold its annual study day. This year, various speakers will reflect on the theme "The Literary Translator in the Digital World". This edition will take place at KU Leuven - Antwerp, Campus Opera. The event will also be livestreamed. Read further for more information and registration.
During this study day, translators and translation scholars will explore how literary translators navigate visibility, self-promotion and collaboration online—from building a social media presence to forming translator collectives and acting as ambassadors for translated literature.
Keynote
The event will open with a keynote by noted literary translator Daniel Hahn, titled: “Privilege and (In)visibility: The Literary Translator in the Digital Age.”
In this talk, Hahn will draw from his experiences as a blogger, media personality, and advocate for literary translation, offering his personal insights into the challenges and benefits of online self-representation. His keynote will discuss translators’ digital presence in relation to questions of labour equity, prestige, and access, speaking from the provocative position of a literary translator who can afford not to insist on his own visibility.
About Daniel Hahn
Daniel Hahn is a British writer, editor, and award-winning translator of over sixty books, working primarily from Portuguese, Spanish, and French. He is also known for Catching Fire: A Translation Diary, written alongside his English translation of Diamela Eltit’s Jamás el fuego nunca (Never Did the Fire)—a rare, candid account of the day-to-day work of a literary translator. Hahn is a prominent advocate for translation and was awarded the title of OBE for his contributions to literature.

Language: Hahn’s keynote lecture will be held in English; all other sessions during the study day will be held in Dutch.
